Religious items to go on display in Gomel on 26 December

GOMEL, 20 December (BelTA) – “The Holy Faces of Christ and the Mother of God” exhibition will open in the Rumyantsevs-Paskevichs Palace in Gomel on 26 December, BelTA has learnt from the museum.

The exposition will feature icons, books, and copper castings from the funds of the museum of the Rumyantsevs-Paskevichs Palace and private collections. Specialists say that the icons represent different painting traditions, but have the common theme of Christ and the Mother of God central to Christian art.

The collection of icons and religious items has been gathered since the establishment of the museum. Articles from the chapel of the Paskevich family became the first items of the collection. Exhibits that appeared later in the collection show the diversity of icon-painting traditions that existed on the territory of Gomel Oblast. Orthodox icons painted by professionals are distinguished by a high level of excellence. Despite the seeming simplicity of the style described as “folk naive”, the icons present the philosophy of the nation. The icons of Old Believers created on the territory of the region go back to the old Russian traditions developed in the works of talented artists of the 17th – early 20th centuries.

The visitors to the exhibition will also have an opportunity to learn about the restoration works carried out by the museum staff members. Some restored icons will be put on display for the first time.

The exhibition will last for a month.
